Sun (サン, San) is one of the main characters of Fire Punch.
Appearance[]
He has long blonde hair and a more feminine look at age 8. After the timeskip he sports a more manly look, with two robotic legs and shorter hair, Sun also notes that he and Judah look identical.
Personality[]
Sun was originally an innocent and naive boy that wanted to bring warmth back into the world. Upon being saved by Agni he grew to admire the man and saw him as akin to a God following after him whenever he could. His naivety allowed him to be tricked by Judah into becoming a firewood slave for Behemdorg and upon meeting Neneto did not realize the implications that Jack and the soldiers were intending on sexually abusing them as well. Sun however is aware that the state of the world is wrong and that people shouldn't be used as slaves for firewood as he clings to his image of Agni as the one who will save them all, when Agni's group rescues him his admiration for the man grows more.
Over time this admiration for Agni begins to cause the Sun to come up with myths about Agni's power's as do the newly freed slaves form Agniism. Following the destruction Of Judah's world tree, Sun with the help of former Jack and Sulya begin to craft fake bible verses and more lies about Agniism and turn the religion into a cult while hiding the actual state of the world following the world tree's collapse, showing that Sun has developed deceitful traits. By the time Sun is 18, his hatred for Judah grew to an obsessive degree and the Agniists have convinced their cult she is the source of all problems while hypocritically using her very same tactics and abuse of power seen by his silencing and swift execution of a Behemdolg recruit.
When speaking with Neneto he admits he is merely acting and that Agni has in truth disserted the cult to live with Judah, and initially promises that despite the lies he wouldn't do anything to endanger the Agniists. However his fanatism for Agni turns into delusion quickly as he convinces himself that he is truly a God that's been testing his faith the entire time, going so far as to kill Jack and Sulya for "disrespecting" him completely disregarding the plan to capture Judah and make her into the world tree again.
Suns delusions ran so far he had abandoned the entire idea of turning Judah into a world tree opting to kill her and effectively doom humanity to bring them closer to Agni, even going so far as to nearly light Neneto on fire for telling his followers the truth on Agni. Ironically, upon actually being confronted by a blind raged Agni sun becomes confused finding him unrecognizable and disappointed opting to fight him to bring back the "real Agni" unable to see reality for what it is.
History[]
Sun was born as an electric blessed type, according to Sulya's revelations it is heavily implied that Sun is a descendant of the evolved generation of humans that possessed multiple blessings.[3] As a child Sun's village caught illnesses and in order to protect him his older brother came up with a lie that he was liability to get him to leave. At some point Sun was captured by slavers and when he was being transported to Behemdorg to be sold as a slave, when the group of soldiers guarding the caravan decided to execute some of these slaves as examples for the others to fear. It was at this time that Agni happened to be passing by.
Agni, having rescued Sun and the prisoners by killing the soldiers continues on his track to kill Doma. However, Sun decided to follow Agni. After some time Sun collapses due to exhaustion and the cold, and Agni stays by his side to warm him up. The duo is then ambushed by a group of Behemdorg soldiers and are caught in an avalanche, but Agni manages to rescue the boy.
Shortly after, the two encountered a masked soldier with regenerative blessing who defeats Agni by cutting his head off and slowing his regeneration by continuously shooting him. This person turned out to be Judah. Agni's head is then transported to the capital and Sun was captured to be sold as slave once again.
While in captivity, he met a girl named Neneto. The two discussed an escape plan using Sun's blessing to shock their captor once Neneto gave the signal, after meeting the man they were assigned to and discovering his true intentions Sun shocks him and the two flee.
As soon as they left the room however, Sun's legs were chopped off preventing his escape. The first captor, now woken up, used his blessing to stop the bleeding and told Sun that he would be used as fuel for his electricity blessing.
Sun ended up in a fuel production factory where countless of blessed humans were strapped to beds and extraction machines were hooked up to them. A force feeding machine is also attached to their necks to prevent them from starving themselves. There was no hope within the people who had now viewed themselves as just 'fuel' rather than human beings. However, this started to change when Sun's unwavering faith in Agni has led the others to believe in this god-person's existence and that he would come and save them all.
This proved to be correct after Agni decided to free the prisoners during his raid of Behemdorg. Most prisoners including Sun and other people were set free and transported by the rebel group that appeared to aid Agni during the fight.
Everyone arrived back in a village and by that point, the seeds of the beliefs had turned into a seedling. With the appearance of the man on fire leading many former prisoners to believe in the existence of the fire man who is now known widely as 'Fire punch' and the religion called 'Agniism' was born.
After the time skip, he is shown to have become the main religious figure of Agniism, Having become so obsessed with Agni that he killed two of his closest allies Sulya and Jack, just for not having faith in his "god".
Once Agni arrives, Sun becomes angered by his demon like appearance and thinks Agni is testing his devotion. He proceeds to brutally beat Agni, having become far stronger over the course of the timeskip. After Agni reverts to his regular form as Fire Punch, Sun blows up his body just in case he was lying.
As Sun celebrates his victory, believing he has passed the test his "god" has given to him, Agni touches Sun, which makes him burn alive. As he burns alive he yells Agni's name, before the fire finishes burning his face thus killing him.
Powers & Abilities[]
Electricity[]
- At 8 years old, Sun could only produce small amounts of electricity, enough to stun but not kill a person.
- At 18, Sun had become extremely powerful. Being able to hover in midair, move at the speed of lightning and his electricity becoming so strong he could vaporize flesh as well as blow up an entire house with a single kick.
Relationships[]
- Agni: Sun views Agni as a god, due to him appearing as Sun prayed to the gods to be saved from the Behemdorg soldiers. Throughout the story he is shown to believe in Agni, having no doubt that he would save him and the other firewood from Behemdorg and telling the story about how Agni had saved him near the start of the manga.
- After the timeskip, his trust in Agni had turned into an obsessive, religious idealism. He kills his allies Jack and Sulya after they admit that they don't truly believe in Agni. Despite his obsession with Agniism, he seems to still care about Agni's own happiness over even the survival of the world, as he was against the idea to kidnap Judah as it might make Agni unhappy. Though his delusions lead him to disregard this as he opted to simply kill Judah and doom humanity in order to "go to Agni's heaven". Even upon seeing an deranged faceless Agni, Sun deludes himself into thinking he isn't the real Agni and goes on to fight him.
- Neneto: Sun meets her when he is taken to Behemdorg, she tells him that they will be used as sex slaves, Sun then says he has to escape, so they utilize his Blessing to try and escape. Over time they grew closer as friends with Neneto dotting after him, though in ten years time their friendship became strained as sun became a cult leader of the Agniists and nearly lights her on fire. Regardless Neneto still cared a lot about Sun and was deeply hurt when he was killed by Agni, after he lost his memories, she gives him Sun's name and raises him.
Trivia[]
- The name Sun which has been adopted by Agni after he lost his memories seems to point towards the word 'sun' in English. This has been supported by the ending, in which Agni and Judah end up in the space for eternity together. The two having their other names as Sun and Luna meaning sun and moon respectively. The sun also fits Agni thematically since he is burning for the majority of the manga.
